How To Refinish Hardwood Floors

If you are thinking about refinishing your hardwood floors, then the first thing is to determine if the refinishing is really required or not. There is a simple test to determine this. Just put a drop of water on the floor and watch it carefully.Does it bead up or soak very slowly? In that case your floor does not need a refinishing, and only requires a good cleaning. However, if the water soaks very fast, then clearly the finishing has worn off, and so the hardwood floor needs to be refinished.

The things you should know before refinish hardwood floors

Before you get started with refinishing, it is very important to know how thick the hardwood floor is. Many of hardwood floors installed today are really quite thin. If that’s the case with your hardwood floor as well, then it is better to trust professionals with the refinishing, as it would be too complicated for you to do on your own. But if your hardwood floors are thicker than at least a quarter of an inch, then you can do the refinishing yourself, by following the instructions here.

While refinishing your hardwood floor, you will be doing a lot of sanding, which means a lot of sawdust will get everywhere. That’s why you should empty the entire room and shift all the furniture, clothing, electronics etc., to another room. Empty your closets as well. Now tape up the electrical outlets, doorways, lighting, windows and so on.

Sanding hardwood floors

While sanding the hardwood floors, it is important to wear protective goggles and a respirator. The last think you would want is for your eyes to get damaged or lungs to get affected.

Now clean the floor and vacuum it as thoroughly as possible. It is important to be patient and allow the sander to work at its own pace while refinishing the floor. Do the whole room as evenly as possible.

Refinishing floors

First, you should begin with the coarse grain and work from the center of the room to the edges and go back and forth as smoothly as possible. It will take you a couple of grains to get the floor perfectly smooth and finished.  Typically, this involves a profession of around four to six grains, as you work from the coarsest grain to the finest. Look for instructions from the manufacturer on which grain to start with as well.

Finally, when you choose your new finish or stain, be sure to have selected it well ahead of time. Please understand that that some stains have to be applied both before and after the final sanding. Choose a finish of your choice as long as it adds to the attractiveness of the hardwood floors and helps it last longer. After applying the stain, allow it to dry well. Once the stain has been fully dried, your hardwood floors can be considered to be successfully refinished and are ready for use.

So that’s how to refinish hardwood floors. It is always better to get professional help if you have never done refinishing better.
